Time and time again, communities tell us: trauma is the missing piece of peacebuilding. Without healing, development fails. Without healing, wounds, grievances and suspicions are easily triggered, putting peace at risk.

Addressing trauma can seem overwhelming in countries devastated by conflict. It’s not a single family or victim who are affected, but whole communities. It’s not uncommon to find only 1 or 2 mental health professionals for an entire country. But it is also these regions that often have a rich tradition of interdependence. With some basic knowledge and skills, community members can ethically provide a vast amount of the support that’s needed. peacebuilding projects that recognize and address the impact of trauma. With practical methods that can be used in daily life, we promote recovery and resilience among IDPs in South Sudan, Boko Haram-affected communities in Nigeria, returning child soldiers and sex slaves in Liberia, and perpetrators and survivors of the Rwandan genocide. Ginny is a co-developer of MBB Consulting’s Trauma-Informed Peacebuilding and Development Assistance curriculum, which helps NGOs, development firms, and donors strengthen their work by integrating these principles.
